Are Dental Implants Painful?

Dr. Almunajed having a consultation with a patient about dental implants

A dental implant is the closest you can get to replacing a natural tooth in terms of feeling and function. They’re so stable you might forget they aren’t your natural teeth.

Dr. Husam Almunajed and the team at Empire Dental Aesthetics understand the artistry involved in making a tooth look natural while giving it the strength it needs to function correctly.

But what exactly is a dental implant and do they hurt more than an extraction?

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a titanium post placed in the bone and topped with a crown made of porcelain. They’re ridged so that your natural bone has something to stick to, similar to the scaffolding surrounding a skyscraper.

How long do implants take to heal?

After placing the dental implant, Dr. Almunajed will leave your implant alone to heal and fuse with your jaw bone. This process is called osseointegration.

During this time, new bone grows around the implant and treats it like a natural tooth root, supporting it to provide a solid base for your artificial tooth. This process can take up to six months.

Once healed, a custom abutment is screwed into the implant to support the tooth above the gums. Finally, impressions are taken to fabricate a natural-looking porcelain crown to be screw-retained to the implant.

Which hurts more: a tooth extraction or an implant?

You’ll be pleased to know that many patients report that the procedure involved in getting an implant often hurts less than having a tooth extracted!

But remember: Discomfort following any procedure can vary depending on many factors. We’ll tell you more below:

What is the recovery time from dental implant surgery?

Once your anesthesia wears off, you might feel some discomfort. As with most dental surgery, patients report:

  • Discomfort and tenderness in the placement site
  • Minor swelling
  • Bruising

For most patients, these symptoms will feel their worst two to three days after your procedure and progressively get better over the following week. Your mouth and implant site should feel back to normal about two weeks after your implant surgery.
